Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.
1 Corinthians 10:31
The purpose of Providence is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever. That is the goal of all churches through the ages. A goal renewed in the Reformation. A goal rooted in God's providence. And providence is a doctrine we do not fear but heartily embrace. If God be for us, who can be against us? We can stand sure in His immutable promises and glorify Him in all things.
Glorifying God means two things: evangelism and discipleship. Evangelism is about bringing the demands of the Law and the sweetness of the Gospel to a dying world. This is accomplished through our members’ spontaneous witnessing in every day life and various efforts from the pastor to bring the truth of the Word to others. Discipleship is about growing in grace and truth as a Christian. This is accomplished through public worship, Sunday school, private family devotions, bible studies, fellowship, and writings. Both activities are commanded by God and embraced by our church.
Our church summarizes our beliefs in the Westminster Confession of Faith. We are part of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church, a conservative denomination historically rooted in the Reformation.
Born January 11, 1972 in Spartenburg, SC, Shawn Mathis was raised in a military home. In 1979 his family moved to Colorado, became Christians and joined a local Charismatic church. After graduation, he joined the Air Force, read Banner of Truth and discovered a book labeled, Ten Points of Calvinism. After an honorable discharge in 1994 he found the author of that book and attended Providence. There his life was challenged by preaching, by friends, and especially by his lovely wife-to-be who challenged his charismatic ways. Over time, others in the church recognized God’s gifts and nominated him for deacon, then ruling elder. Finally, Dr. Coppes brought Shawn under his godly and learned wings, mentoring him for the ministry.
Pastor Mathis was a former news and opinion writer for a national news-source, until he wrote one too many articles on gay marriage. He tutored critical thinking and apologetics for homeschoolers. He currently writes at PastorMathis.com. He is available for Bible Study and questions about the bible (303.900.2027).
