The History of Providence Orthodox Presbyterian Church

Providence Presbyterian Church was born amidst hard and troubled times. The Lord our God has sustained us through His providential acts since our formation. We were created, as all churches are, to glorify the Lord in all that we do. But we also had other goals: peace, tranquility, and unity of the brethren. All these are still our goals.

Organized on March 8, 1987, our first & founding pastor, Dr. Leonard J. Coppes, was called on October 11 and then installed November 15th.

We first met near I-25 & Colorado at a Christian school gym, moving in 2001 to our current location. As Providence grew numerically and spiritually, a newsletter was created, Reformation Day parties were celebrated, sister churches were assisted, radio ads were promulgated, teaching was expanded, and fellowship was engendered.

In 1995, a young, zealous man visited the church, his first Presbyterian church. He was reared a Charismatic Baptist yet recently learned of the glories of the fullness of the Gospel as expressed in the Reformation faith. This man’s name was Shawn Mathis, our current pastor.

Shawn joined Providence, where he met and married his wife. He was ordained as a Deacon and then a Ruling Elder. With Dr. Coppes as his mentor and friend, in 2006, he was ordained as co-pastor and called unanimously by Providence. Dr. Coppes retired as the active pastor in 2010.

Our church has always acknowledged what we are without Christ: hopeless, lost, and without hope in this world. But God, in His great love, wherein He loved us, sent us the Holy Spirit to regenerate our souls and to draw us together with bands of love. He graced us with the fruits of the Spirit; He granted us differing gifts. These we share with one another. We care and pray and love. We weep for others. But we also see God work in ourselves, subduing us to Himself.

As we reflect upon our past, seeing God move marvelously, we see the future. Look and see if you have not grown in patience; know that you take your responsibilities more seriously; examine the truth that God holds onto His own; observe how you know more of His Word. Taste and see that the Lord is good.

Opportunities wait for us because God has foreordained good works that we should walk therein. College students, neighbors, military families, and everyday workers need the Gospel, else they perish. We pray for each other; we pray for our church. We implore the Spirit to excite our souls to live out the Gospel in thought, word, and deed.

We acknowledge our Covenant-keeping God’s wonderful acts of Providence. And we ask for His continued blessing upon us because of the merit and work of Jesus Christ, our Great Justifier & Savior.

Amen
